How far should a toilet drain be from the wall?
It is important to measure the toilet rough-in distance when you decide to repair or relocate your toilet. And if you are unfamiliar with what this is, you have to come to the right place. Learn how to calculate the toilet rough-in distance, which is comprised of four dimensions, in the following article.
Having a well-designed bathroom makes it easy for family members to get to each piece of equipment. Building codes define minimum distances between fixtures and walls, as well as between fixtures and each other. Additionally, if you have a physically disabled family member or if you’re building or renovating restrooms in your business, you may be subject to additional rules and restrictions. Architectural designs should reflect the distance between the toilet and the wall determined during the design stage.
How far away from the wall should a toilet drain be?
- The distance between the toilet flange and the wall behind it.
- Allowing for the appropriate space from left-to-right
- Just how much room should I leave in front of my bowl?
- The location of the cold-water supply pipe.
1-The Distance Between the Toilet Flange and the Wall Behind It:
- In order to get started, you’ll need a tape measure. The water closet flange’s centre should be 12 inches from the back wall.
- When taking this measurement, make sure you’re measuring from the finished wall and not the base moulding. Be sure to take into account how thick your back wall is, as well.
- In the case of mortar that is 1/8" thick, add an additional 1/8", and in the case of tiles or drywall, add its thickness. As a result, the overall distance is now 12 1/8". If your back wall is thicker, add more.
- Some toilets have a rough-in of 10" or 14". Before calculating the distance from the flange to the back wall, it’s vital to know the exact size of your toilet’s rough-in.
2-Allowing for the Appropriate Space from Left-to-Right:
- Any sidewall or nearby fixture must be at least 15" away from the toilet’s flange. However, 15" is the absolute minimum.
- A 15-inch distance from the vanity, shower, tub and back and side walls are required to accommodate the toilet flange.
- So, if your wall is 1/2 inch thick, you’ll need to increase the total length by 1/2 inch, just as you did before.
3-Just How Much Room Should I Leave in Front of My Bowl?
- Plumbing codes dictate how far the front of your toilet should be from any wall or fixture.
- There are certain jurisdictions that are included under the IPC (International Plumbing Code).
- There must be 15" of space to work with in this situation. When it comes to the UPC (Uniform Plumbing Code), though, you’ll need a minimum of 24".
- When calculating this distance, from the toilet’s front edge to the nearest wall or fixture.
4-The Location of the Cold-Water Supply Pipe:
- Begin by taking a measurement six inches left of your toilet’s flushing flange.
- You may start measuring 7" above the finished floor. Verify if your calculations are accurate.
- Water lines that are too low will need that you notch the trim.
- However, you may want to go higher just to be safe.
Before you calculate the toilet rough-in distance, purchase your water closet. You can choose from a wide range of toilets from the AGL Bathware collection. Follow these recommendations to make sure your toilet fits, functions properly and is as comfortable as possible when you use it.
